Blog Prompt 2_TKAM

As you followed the action in the courtroom, which character did you empathize with most? Least? Explain.

In the courtroom, the person I empathize with the most would be Tom Robinson. This is because through the entire incident, he had not done a single thing. In fact, all he was trying to do was to help Mayella Ewell. Instead of being rewarded for all his help, he was even accused by Mayella of saying that he raped her. Even though Tom’s words were very convincing and seemed truer than Mayella’s tale, he was still convicted because he was a black. I find this result very infuriating, as even the jury and the judge was unwilling to listen to any of Tom’s story just because of his skin color. Right from the start, even without a court case, Tom was already identified as the culprit in this incident. Because of this, Tom had to try and escape from something he did not do, and ended up being killed wrongly.

In the courtroom, the person I empathize with the least would be Bob Ewell. This is because this evil man deserves no empathy at all. In the courtroom, he was actually the one manipulating Mayella into thinking that it was Tom Robinson who raped her but in fact, he was the real culprit. This guy was making use of Tom Robinson’s skin color and turned the facts around the table, and made the judge and the jury think that he was the culprit because “he is a nigger”.
