Anger Management

With reference from one of the previous PCME lesson Anger Management, I am going to talk about my views on it in this post.

I believe anger management, although not the most important psychological control we must have, is a very crucial factor we must have to ensure that we become a better person. One without proper anger management would flare up easily and cannot control this anger of theirs, leading to them doing wrong things when they are hot in their head. At the end of the day, most people who cannot handle their anger well would find that they would soon be segregated from the crowd due to their bad temper and habit to flare up at the slightest thing you can find.

To be able to handle anger well, the first thing you would need to do; think before you act. Whenever you feel angry and have the urge to punch that very person before you, think. What has this person done to make you so angry at him? Maybe its just you yourself overacting? For those people who really cannot control their actions when they are angry, they should just walk away, not because they are afraid or cowards, but because it is a chance for them to cool down to make sure they do not do anything wrong.

Some extreme examples of anger would be people who actually kill others just because they were very angry at what they do. This moment of folly not only made them do something immoral, but also ruined their whole life because of this criminal record. Other cases would be whereby parents quarral and get angry over each other, in the end filing for divorce. At the end of the day, the one who perishes is neither of them, but their own flesh and blood; their children.

As such, I believe that anger management is a very important quality we must all have in order to succeed in life.

Harper Lee’s novel is full of interesting and richly paint characters. Which character was your favourite and why?

Among all the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird, my favourite character would be Atticus Finch. I started liking him especially a lot after reading about the court case. This is because I find that his actions of standing up for the blacks although others are prejudice against them are very commendable. Even though he was called a “nigger-lover”, he disregarded this comment and continued helping Tom Robinson, as he knew that was the right thing to do. People like him are very rare back in those days, who was willing to work with them, what’s more help these black people, who were regarded as of much lower status then the whites. To be able to stand up for justice; that is what I really admire about Atticus Finch.

Did the ending of the novel surprise you? If you were the author, would you have ended the story differently? Explain.

No, the ending of the novel did not surprise me. It was quite a predicted ending that the mystery of the Radleys be solved. If I were the author, I would have ended the story differently. In the first place, I wouldn’t have talked much about the Radleys since to me, they are quite redundant characters in the story. They did not really make a difference in the story, just more of a tale for Jem and Scout to make about. I would have wanted a more moralized ending, like having him actually caught in act of him raping his own daughter, Mayella Ewell and eventually brought to justice. This would at least prove the innocence of Tom Robinson, although he is already dead, also showing that being black was not an indication that he is a bad person. I think this type of ending would be able to educate the reader more instead of having him just beaten to death.

As you followed the action in the courtroom, which character did you empathize with most? Least? Explain.

In the courtroom, the person I empathize with the most would be Tom Robinson. This is because through the entire incident, he had not done a single thing. In fact, all he was trying to do was to help Mayella Ewell. Instead of being rewarded for all his help, he was even accused by Mayella of saying that he raped her. Even though Tom’s words were very convincing and seemed truer than Mayella’s tale, he was still convicted because he was a black. I find this result very infuriating, as even the jury and the judge was unwilling to listen to any of Tom’s story just because of his skin color. Right from the start, even without a court case, Tom was already identified as the culprit in this incident. Because of this, Tom had to try and escape from something he did not do, and ended up being killed wrongly.

In the courtroom, the person I empathize with the least would be Bob Ewell. This is because this evil man deserves no empathy at all. In the courtroom, he was actually the one manipulating Mayella into thinking that it was Tom Robinson who raped her but in fact, he was the real culprit. This guy was making use of Tom Robinson’s skin color and turned the facts around the table, and made the judge and the jury think that he was the culprit because “he is a nigger”.

What do you think is involved in making a fair judgment about a person or situation? Explain.

I believe that in making a fair judgment about a person or a situation, the first thing you would need to do is to put aside all the biases and unfair views towards the person or the situation you are judging. This is to ensure that in judging, your own views and thoughts on the person or situation would not affect the fairness of the judging, which is the main point of the whole thing.

Also, to judge a person, I believe you would need to know in the first place why you have that judgment of the person or of the situation. Is it because of something he did or because of some rumours? How reliable is the source of information to what he did? Example, if you saw a person shouting in class, some people’s first impression of this guy would be that he is a very loud, a very rude person. But just because of one incident, you were able to lay down a fair judgment of him? No! In order to make a fair judgment, we cannot understand the situation from just one point of view, but from several different sources for you to be able to view the situation or person from different perspectives. In actual fact, all of this still leads back to bias against others, which would be a crucial factor for you not to have in judging a person or situation fairly.
